Rules Quiz August 2019: About Balls and Clubs!

Now it is time for the “Rules Quiz August 2019”!

Below please find three easy (?!) questions about the Rules of Golf. Answer them in the comment section (“Leave a reply”) at the bottom.

Among those (if any!) with all three answers correct, we will draw lots about a copy of the Rules book “First Aid – The Rules of Golf” (which is published later this year)!

Questions.

  1. What is the maximum number of clubs you are allowed to bring?
  2. What is the maximum number of balls you are allowed to bring?
  3. What is the maximum number of putters you are allowed to bring?

    You may BRING as many clubs as you wish, but you may only have 14 in your bag when you begin play.
    You may bring as many golf balls as you wish. there is no limit on the number of golf balls carried by the player.
    You may bring as many putters as you wish, as long as when you begin your round, you only have a total of 14 clubs in your bag. That being said, you could, in theory, have 14 putters in your bag.

    You can bring as BRING clubs as desired, but you can PLAY your round with a maximum of 14 clubs.
    You can BRING as many balls as you wish and when you PLAY you can carry as many balls as you wish.
    You can BRING as many putters as you wish, but when you PLAY your round you are allowed just 14 clubs maximum—if you want all of your 14 clubs to be putters, that’s your option.

      I got the last bit wrong. You can only carry a max no of 13 putters during a round as you must have a club suitable for measuring which can’t be a putter.

    Careful on #3, you can have up to 14 clubs but one must be something other than a putter to be able to establish your relief area under the rules. A club length is defined as the longest club in your bag “other than a putter” & relief areas are defined as one or two club lengths. I would say you are allowed 13 putters & one other club besides a putter for your 14th club. USGA has confirmed this as we had a player in AZ who only has 1 club in his bag (a putter) and plays every shot with his putter. USGA says player is required to start round with at least one of his 14 clubs being something other than a putter. After starting he can disgard it if he wants to.

      Club lengths are used to define teeing areas also, so a putter won’t do.
